Salt Lake City's brick bungalows and Victorian cottages sit on narrow lots where a post hole often hits Lake Bonneville gravel and cobble within the first foot. When you need a fence that works on this ground, you call Salt Lake City Fence Company.

Since 2012, we have installed and repaired wood privacy fences, vinyl, chain link, ornamental metal, and automatic driveway gates throughout Salt Lake City and the surrounding area. We know the site conditions here, the local code and HOA rules, and how to build a fence that holds.

Fencing in Salt Lake City (84180)

Salt Lake City homeowners face real constraints. Narrow lots mean tight access for equipment and materials. Deed restrictions and HOA architectural standards govern height, material, and color in master-planned communities. The soil composition, with gravel and cobble close to the surface, demands that post holes be dug carefully and posts set properly in concrete to avoid settling and leaning. Corner visibility, setback, and height rules vary by jurisdiction, and permits are required in some areas and not others.

We have been doing this work in Salt Lake City and the surrounding area since 2012. Our team is fully insured, and we are members of the American Fence Association. We work from your existing survey and install on the line you identify. Before we dig, we call 811 for a utility locate, as required by Utah law.

How a Fence Job Works in Salt Lake City

We start with a free on-site assessment. You tell us what you need, we measure the fence line, check for utilities, review any HOA rules or deed restrictions that apply, and confirm permit requirements with the city or county building department. We give you a clear estimate with no surprises.

Once you approve the work, our crews handle site setup, post placement and concrete setting, rail and board installation, gate hardware, and final trim. On narrow Salt Lake City lots, we coordinate access carefully and work around existing structures. If we find a post that needs racking or stepping because of grade change, we do that work right.

When the job is done, we clean up all debris and walk the fence line with you. You get a finished fence that meets code, sits on your property line, and will last.

Pricing depends on the material you choose and the site conditions. Chain link fence runs from $17 per linear foot. Wood and privacy fence starts at $29 per linear foot. Vinyl runs from $40 per foot. Ornamental metal and aluminum start at $44 per foot. Pool fence installation begins at $36 per foot. Farm and ranch fencing is available from $13 per foot. Fence repair work starts at $475, and post repair or replacement begins at $475. Gate installation and repair start at $500. Automatic and driveway gates begin at $2,950. Fence replacement and removal start at $2,550. Fence staining and restoration begin at $995. For commercial, temporary, or storm damage assessment, we provide a free site quote. Call us at (385) 354-7337 to discuss your project and get a detailed estimate.

What happens when a post hole hits gravel and cobble just below the surface in Salt Lake City?
You dig through it and keep going. The gravel and cobble layer is common here within the first foot. We dig below it, set the post in concrete, and tamp the soil around the concrete collar. A properly set post will not heave or lean, even in rocky ground. If you have an existing fence with posts that are leaning because they were set shallow or tamped without concrete, we can replace those posts and reset them correctly.
Do I need a permit for a fence in Salt Lake City?
Permit requirements vary across Salt Lake City and the surrounding jurisdictions. Some areas require a permit for residential fence installation, and others do not. Fence height, setback from the property line, and corner visibility rules are set by the city or county and differ by location. If your property is in a master-planned community, your HOA may have additional rules about height, material, and color. We confirm permit requirements with the building department before we start work, and we help you understand what applies to your property.
My fence is leaning. Do I need to replace it, or can it be repaired?
It depends on why it is leaning. If posts are heaving because they were set shallow or without concrete, we can replace those posts and reset them properly. If the fence frame is sound but the posts have shifted, repair is often the right choice. If the posts are rotted at the ground line or the frame is damaged beyond repair, replacement makes more sense. We assess the fence in person and tell you honestly whether repair or replacement is the better spend.
What do I need to know about pool fencing in Salt Lake City?
Pool barriers are required by Utah state law and local code. A pool fence must meet specific height, gate hardware, and latching requirements to prevent unsupervised access. We install pool fencing to meet local pool barrier codes. Final determination of compliance rests with the authority having jurisdiction, which is typically the city or county building department or the health department. A barrier is not a substitute for supervision. Call us at (385) 354-7337 to discuss your pool fence project, and we will help you understand the local code requirements.
My HOA has rules about fence color and height. How do I know what is allowed?
Your HOA architectural standards or deed restrictions will spell out the rules. We recommend you review those documents before you call us, or ask your HOA directly. Once you know what is allowed, tell us, and we will build to those specifications. If you are unsure, we can help you understand what we see on the ground in your community, but the final approval comes from your HOA. We work with HOA rules, not against them.
Are you fully insured?
Yes. We carry general liability and workers' compensation insurance. We can provide a certificate of insurance on request.
A severe storm brought down part of my fence. What do I do?
Call us at (385) 354-7337 right away. We offer a free damage assessment. We will look at what came down, what is still standing, and what needs to be repaired or replaced. We can help you document the damage for an insurance claim. We will give you an honest estimate for the repair work. Storm damage is common, and we have the experience to get your fence back in service quickly.
